Marlene Alford, Director of the Restaurant, Preparing For Friday Meal Distribution Overview At the Women's and Children's Free Restaurant, people with different life experiences come together in a safe, accepting setting. In casual conversations, diners and volunteers get to know each other and, hopefully, discover that we share more in common with each other than our differences suggest. To help accomplish the friendship, volunteers are encouraged to eat a meal with the diners when their assigned tasks are completed. There is no "us and them" at the Restaurant. We are one community. We believe that the atmosphere in which our meals are served is as important as the food that is offered. Great care is taken to make sure that everyone is warmly welcomed and is treated with dignity and respect. Courtesy and kindness are hallmarks of the WCFR. Volunteering at the WCFR is more than a service opportunity. It is an entry into a friendly community centered around great food and companionship.Volunteers provide a vital role in creating our atmosphere of warmth and hospitality which draws an increasing number of diners to our restaurant and makes volunteering here such a rewarding experience. Here's How We Can Serve
You!
Meals are served every
Tuesday and Thursday between 4:15 and 5:45PM in the basement of
St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1620 N. Monroe. All women and
their children (ages 0-18) are welcome. We serve meals to young
moms unable to make ends meet, hungry children with no one at home
to cook for them, the working poor, seniors on a fixed income &
those unemployed due to disabilities.
We serve women &
children only. Many have experienced domestic violence, and safety
has become a huge issue for them and their children.
Meals are totally free
of charge to all women & children who come.
We typically serve from
200 to 250 meals in house per week, and also send out another 200 to
250 prepackaged entree meals every Friday.
Last year we served
nearly 24,000 meals and utilized 170,000 pounds of food from
community donors.
